In the story “City of Ember” by Jeanne DuPrau, the city where the story takes place, Ember, the lights that replace the sun in this underground city are flickering, and longer blackouts are occurring as the lights threaten to go out. Light bulbs and other items are running low, and the generator is falling apart. The main characters, Doon and Lina, have realized this, and have found an old document stating instructions for something, most likely the way out of Ember, along with a secret room where the Mayor is keeping stashes of rare items.
Based on what I know now, there are only two ways to fix their problem. One, they can recover what the Mayor has taken and repair the generator, thus providing the supplies to keep Ember alive. However, this is only a temporary solution, as the supplies would not last forever. Two, Doon and Lina could decipher the instructions and get the city to safety. This is the final solution for the other method as well, because when the extra supplies run out, they will have no other choice. The question is, will Doon and Lina save the city, or die trying, and have the city die with them?
