The Dying Ember

The lights,
They flicker and they flash,
As they threaten to go out.

The generator,
It rumbles and it shakes,
And piece by piece,
It falls apart.

The supplies are scarce,
And the mayor takes what’s left,
Keeping it for himself.

Ember is dying,
But there is hope,
For the instructions have been found,
And even in their damaged state,
They can be deciphered,
Doon and Lina did,
And they escaped.

Although they were trapped,
Like two mice in a maze crafted by the mayor,
And the instructions seemed like gibberish,
They made it out and followed their hearts,
To their place of origin.

Black and grey was all there was in Ember,
Illuminated by a faint glow from the failing light system,
But now Doon and Lina are free,
They see blues and greens,
And all of it bright and sunny.

It was like they stepped into a painting,
Creatures of sorts they had never seen,
Crawled and flew around them,
As they gazed with amazement.

Then they found the way back into Ember,
And it seemed like just a small blemish on the face of the Earth,
The place where they grew up,
What had been their whole world,
Seemed so small and incomplete.

Although they wished that they could go home,
And free the rest of Ember,
They could not,
So on the surface they remained,
As they sent a message into the city,
And hoped that someone would find it,
Then rise up and lead everyone to freedom,
But they could do nothing more than wait,
And survive the dangers that faced them.
