Character Development - Doon Harrow from The City of Ember

In the book The City of Ember by Jeanne DuPrau, one of the main characters is Doon Harrow. Doon is an intelligent young boy who believes he can fix the generator, which supplies power to the entire city of Ember. However, no one really understands how electricity works, and he is no exception.
When assignment day comes, he gets messenger but would much rather have pipeworks. Although most people don’t want that job, it is the only job that gets near the generator. In his quest to save Ember, he trades jobs with the other main character, Lina Mayfleet, who had drawn pipeworks.
Doon is stubborn, has anger issues, and takes things too seriously, but he has a good heart, and is very observant. He knows that Ember is in trouble, and notices many things in the instructions that Lina did not. If it wasn’t for him, he and Lina would have never escaped.
By the end of the story, Doon loosens up a bit but not too much. He still has the same anger issues though, and those may cause some issues in the future. Fortunately, Doon knows what needs to be done, and he’s willing to put everything on the line to do it.
Although he may be trouble sometimes, he’s a team player. He’s definitely going to have a big part in the rest of the series, and I can’t wait to see what it is.
